Intermediate to Challenging Drakensberg Hike
Includes a 4×4 Trip up Sani Pass!
The Sani Pass to Thabana Ntlenyana Hike is a great trip to do.
Watch my video of this hike here. We love to do the Sani Pass to Thabana Ntlenyana hike because not only do we walk up the highest peak in Lesotho but we get to do a fun 4×4 drive up Sani Pass. Because we cross the border into Lesotho, remember to bring your passport. You can check the visa requirements for Lesotho here.
We are here to climb the highest peak in Southern Africa. Thabana Ntlenyana (3482m) is the highest peak in Lesotho and the name translates as “pretty little mountain”. After the lovely 4×4 drive up Sani Pass we start the 3 day hike to Thabana Ntlenyana. Day 1 is only 2 hours of walking over the first hill to our camp near a lovely mountain stream. We get to the top of Sani in Lesotho around 1pm so have a lunch at the cars and then we are off into the mountains.

After leaving our cars at the highest pub in Africa we head out to hike from Sani Pass to Thabana Ntlenyana.
Due to the fact that it is quite high we do have some hills to walk up. We start off just below 3000m and end up at 3482m. Therefore expect some great views over the mountain kingdom of Lesotho. The second day of hiking is about 5 hours to summit Thabana Ntlenyana.
On day 3 which is the last day we wake up to start our hike back to Sani top. Timing is great as we arrive at Sani top in time for lunch. It is the highest pub in Africa so we really should visit it. After an amazing time in the mountain kingdom of Lesotho we drive back down Sani pass and home. Everyone should visit our mountainous neighbor and do the Sani Pass to Thabana Ntlenyana hike, the highest peak in Lesotho.
