The 3 Highest Peaks in South Africa in 5 Days Hike
Challenging Drakensberg Hike
Bucket List Hike
Our Hike the 3 highest peaks in South Africa hike includes Champagne Castle, Mafadi & Injasuthi Dome. As a result, this is quite an achievement and a popular hike to do. Usually, we start at Nkosasana lodge the night before so we can get an early start hiking. We start at the Monks Cowl car park and stroll along the contour path past Blind Man’s corner to the base of Greys pass. Here we camp at Keith Bush camp and are surrounded by huge mountains. Apparently, Keith Bush took a tumble while climbing Monks cowl and got a camp site named after him.
Monks cowl and Cathkin are on our left and the mighty Champagne castle is ahead. We can also see the path going up Greys pass. The next day is up Greys pass to camp near Vultures retreat. We arrive in time for lunch at the Nkosazana river on top of the escarpment.
Here we can see the first peak on our itinerary.
Champagne Castle is the 3rd highest peak in South Africa, at 3377m. We summit Champagne castle on day 3 where the views are incredible. After these views, we walk down the valley past Ships prow pass to camp near Leslie’s pass. From here we can see Mafadi peak, another of our hikes. To get there we stroll along the escarpment where we can see the Trojan wall and the Injasuthi triplets to Mafadi Peak, the highest peak in South Africa, at 3450m. Finally, it is all downhill over Injasuthi dome the 2nd highest peak for lunch near the stream at the top of Judges pass.
Then it is down Judges Pass, along the contour path for our last night in the mountains near Centenary hut. The last day is spent walking along one of the most beautiful valleys in the Drakensberg to finish at Injasuthi camp. The total distance for this hike is 46km over quite rough terrain. We start at about 1500m and summit 3 high peaks with a maximum altitude of 3450m. So that is the 3 highest peaks in South Africa hike in 6 amazing days. Done and dusted.
