The Drakensberg Grand Traverse Hike is usually done in 14 days but is possible in just 12 days as it traverses the entire KwaZulu-Natal Drakensberg. It is certainly a life-changing experience; this hike should be on everyone’s bucket list!
Because this is such a long hike, we do transport to the starting point (below the Drakensber Amphitheatre) the day before the hike starts!
The D G T Hike starts at the Amphitheatre in the Northern Drakensberg and traverses the Drakensberg to Bushman’s Nek in the Southern Drakensberg.
During the course of this spectacular hike, we explore about 230km of unbelievable Drakensberg mountain scenery, seeing views all over KwaZulu-Natal and into Lesotho. All the while we will remain at an average of 3000m above sea level.

To do the Drakensberg Grand Traverse Hike we need to take a walk up 5 of the major Drakensberg peaks.
The first peak we walk up is Mount Aux Sources whose summit is 3287m above sea level. This spectacular Drakensberg peak is near the top of the Amphitheatre.
After this we will hike up Cleft Peak, which overlooks the magnificent Cathedral Peak range. As a consequence, the views from the top of Cleft Peak are lovely.
Next up is Champagne Castle, which at 3377m holds the title of being the 3rd highest peak in South Africa. From the top of Champagne Castle, we can get a good look at our next peak: Mafadi Peak. This is the highest peak in South Africa at 3450m above sea level.
Last, but certainly not least, the final peak we take a walk up is Thabana Ntlenyana.
This is the highest peak in Lesotho, and also the highest peak in Southern Africa. Thabana Ntlenyana means “pretty little mountain” and is 3482m above sea level.
Along the way we have the opportunity to sleep in some of the beautiful Drakensberg caves; but most of the time we will sleep in our tents. During the Drakensberg Grand Traverse Hike, we could camp anywhere, but with Drakensberg Hiker you will be taken to the very best Drakensberg camp-sites and consequently greet the morning with the most stunning views. One of the best reasons to to this hike is to enjoy the truly amazing views!
