Wild Lesotho Overland 4×4 Tour
A tour of wild Lesotho should be on everyone’s list. The mountain kingdom of Lesotho is wild and remote and guaranteed to recharge your soul. My 3 day wild Lesotho tour is done in late summer. This makes it easy to camp and explore the wild parts of Lesotho. You are welcome in your 4×4 vehicle or in one of mine as we drive through the green fields in the summer. Check here to watch a video of Lesotho.
Summer is spent enjoying simple mountain lodges and camping.
Warm cozy beds are an option on night 1 as we stay at Highlands lodge. It is just past the town of Mokhotlong. You never know what the weather will do high up in the mountains. Day 1 starts in Pietermaritzburg but we can also meet in Underburg. After about 2 hrs of driving on a tar road we finally arrive at the South African border at the base of the huge Drakensberg mountains. We get our passports checked and then the real adventure starts. Up ahead is a rough 4×4 track rising almost a 1000m to the top of the Drakensberg escarpment. It is an incredible drive to do as we climb and climb. You can see the vegetation changing and it does feel a bit cooler. On top is the Lesotho border where we get our passports stamped and pay a road tax fee.
Nearby is the famous Sani Top Pub.
After popping in for a visit we carry on into Lesotho. I like to stop on top of Black mountain for a lunch with a view. It is at 3250m above sea level so you can imagine the views. From here we carry on through the town of Mokhotlong to our overnight accommodation. Highlands lodge is a lovely place to stay surrounded by mountains. Day 2 is full of adventure as we turn off the main tar road onto the wild Kao mine road.
After about 4 hours of beautiful mountain scenery we arrive at our lunch spot.
This is a day made for relaxing and recharging with some fun 4×4 driving in a remote part of Lesotho. Nearby is the highest diamond mine in the world. Letseng mine is over 300m high and manages to get some big diamonds out of there. Unfortunately we can’t visit as it is very secure. Anyway later in the afternoon we head back to our lodge for the evening.
After supper we sit around the fire solving the worlds problems.
The last day is a drive back on a tar road as it twists around and over huge mountains to arrive back at Sani pass. After getting our passports stamped we enter South Africa for a descent down Sani pass. After a 3 day overland 4×4 tour of Lesotho relaxing we will be ready to go back to work.
