What do I need to know about the Guided Drakensberg Amphitheatre and Tugela Falls 2 day Hike?
This is a great 2-day hike for people with busy lives, who want to experience the beautiful Drakensberg. The Drakensberg Amphitheatre is the second most photographed mountain in South Africa and is absolutely magnificent. When you get on top of the Amphitheater you will see for yourself why people take so many photographs of it.
For this hike, we will meet at Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge at 10 am. You can also spend the night before and or after the hike to make it a relaxing long weekend away from home. Witsieshoek is a 4-hour drive from either Johannesburg or Durban, making it conveniently close. If you would like us to arrange transport for you to the start of the hike. The distance of the Guided Drakensberg Amphitheatre and Tugela Falls Hike
The Drakensberg Amphitheatre and Tugela Falls 2 day hike covers about 6km each day, ascending from 2500m to just under 3000m. On average this hike will take us 4 hours per day. The route is mostly circular starting at the Sentinal car park and walking up the zigzags for a stop above the 3 Witches. After this, we stroll along the contour path to the world famous chain ladders. A bit of a head for heights comes in handy here. After climbing the Chain Ladders we’ll be on top of the Amphitheatre for a gentle stroll to our campsite. The way back down had 2 options. We can climb back down the ladders or down the gully.

What will we see on the Guided Drakensberg Amphitheatre and Tugela Falls Hike?
In addition to the world-renowned Drakensberg Amphitheatre and the Tugela Falls which are the second highest waterfall in the world, we will also see the following. Devils Tooth, the 3 Witches, and Mont-Aux-Sources Peak which is the source of the Tugela River.
Climbing up the chain ladders to get to the top of the Amphitheatre in the Drakensberg
Mount-Aux-Sources is the source of the Tugela which flows into the Indian Ocean. It is also the source of water that ends up in the Orange River finishing in the Atlantic Ocean.
After a wonderful pasta supper in the fresh air of the Drakensberg, we camp right near the Tugela Falls plummeting down the Amphitheatre wall for almost 1000m. As a result, you can imagine the views are stunning as we watch the sun rise behind the Devils’ Tooth. Because we are camping so close to the Tugela Falls, we don’t even need to leave our tents. We can watch the sun-rise in our sleeping bags with a cup of morning coffee! What a way to wake up.
After a leisurely start to the morning, enjoying one of the most beautiful sunrises in the world, we wander up to Beacon Buttress, seeing more amazing views along the way. After this, we’ll walk down The Gully to join the contour path past the zigzags to our cars.
