Hikes in the Drakensberg


We can arrange combinations of the following hikes to meet your requirements and ensure that you have an opportunity to view the Drakensberg as it was meant to be seen ... close-up and on foot.


Northern Drakensberg

6-day traverse from Mont-Aux-Sources to Cathedral Peak (rated as one of the top ten hikes in the world);

4-day guided hike up Mweni or Rockeries and down Ntonjelana Pass, overnight in Mponjwane or Ledges Cave;

4-day guided hike up Organ Pipes, and down Mlanbonja Passes;

2 or 3-day guided hikes are also available in the Cathedral Peak area;

For the more adventurous - do the Bell Traverse and climb Cathedral Peak.





Central Drakensberg

4-day guided hike up Ship's Prow and down Grey's Pass;

2 or 3-day guided hikes are also available around the Champagne Castle and to Zulu Cave;

2, 3 or 4-day guided hikes around Giant's Castle, see the Bushman Paintings and Museum, stay in a lamergeier hide (April to September only!);

3, 4 or 5-day guided hikes around Injasuthi (translates as 'satisfied dog') and summit Mafadi, the highest peak in South Africa, overnight in Upper Injasuthi Cave.


Southern Drakensberg

4-day trip ... drive up Sani Pass (4 x 4 vehicles only), hike to Thabana-Ntlenyana, the highest peak in Southern Africa (including Lesotho), drive back down Sani Pass; rides on local Basotho ponies also available;

2-3-day guided hike up Rhino at Garden Castle, sleeping in Pillar Cave

Experience both the traditional rural Zulu and Basotho cultures "close-up" on a 5 day Drakensberg Culture Hike which commences with staying in an authentic Zulu homestead at Mnweni on the first night, hiking to Rockeries Pass and spending the second night camping in Rockeries Pass itself, hiking to a traditional Basotho Homestead, where you will spend the third night, and leaving in the morning to hike down Ntonjelana Pass where you will spend the fourth night camping.

This is a 12-day slackpacking tour where accommodation is arranged for you in self-catering cottages every night.


Included in this option are 5 days of 'day walks' from the South to the North of the Drakensberg;


4-5 days (depending on your requirements) of Bush Excursions in Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve;


3 days of touring the Northern KwaZulu-Natal Battlefields;

There is a minimum of 'driving time', with a maximum 1 hour of driving on most days;

Throughout this holiday, there are options which include bird-watching. and seasonal activities such as white-water rafting with river guides on the best rivers in South Africa, including the Umkomaas and the Umzimkhulu, mountain biking, etc.

Northern KwaZulu-Natal Battlefields Tour

See some of the sites of famous Boer and Zulu War battles, accommodation is arranged at Spionkop, this is a 3 day tour, including visits to the following Northern KwaZulu-Natal Battlefields:


Spionkop (an historic occasion where three of the pivotal figures of world history:  Winston Churchill, then a journalist and Lieutenant in the South African Light Horse; Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, then a stretcher-bearer in the Indian Ambulance Corps; and General Louis Botha, then commander of the Boer contingent, were all present on the battlefield);

Flyfishing in the KwaZulu-Natal Drakensberg...

Flyfishing in freestone streams and dams of the KwaZulu-Natal Drakensberg with George Forder, he will:

Guide you to the lesser known streams of the Natal Drakensberg providing knowledge of flies, techniques and methods for catching the brown and rainbow trout of the Drakensberg;


Help you with stillwater techniques in the dams and reserves surrounding the Drakensberg;


Demonstrate and teach you to tie the local flies, either imitative or traditional;


Take you on single day excursions or multi day backpacking trips with fly fishing as a focus or option.
